By his wife Bathshua, a Canaanite, he had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. His oldest son, Er, was so evil that the Lord killed him. 4 By his daughter-in-law Tamar, Judah had two more sons, Perez and Zerah. 5 Perez had two sons, Hezron and Hamul. 6 His brother Zerah had five sons: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda. 7 Achan son of Carmi, one of Zerah's descendants, brought disaster on the people of Israel by keeping loot that had been devoted to God. 8 Ethan had one son, Azariah. 9 Hezron had three sons: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb. 10 The family line from Ram to Jesse is as follows: Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon (a prominent man of the tribe of Judah),

  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

Amasa: 2 Samuel 17:25, 2 Samuel 19:13, 2 Samuel 20:4-12, 1 Kings 2:5, 1 Kings 2:32

Jether: Jether, יתר [Strong's H3500], is essentially the same with יתרא [Strong's H3501], Ithra, the latter only having the addition of an א aleph; and it is probable, that he was an Ishmaelite by birth but an Israelite by religion. 2 Samuel 17:25, Ithra an Israelite

Ishmeelite: [Strong's H3459] a descendant of Ishmael

Reciprocal: 1 Chronicles 12:18 - came upon Amasai

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Abigail bare Amasa,.... Who was Absalom's general, afterwards reconciled to David, and designed to be made general of his army, but was slain by Joab, see 2 Samuel 17:25,

and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite; he is called an Israelite, 2 Samuel 17:25, and so in the Targum here, he being either a proselyte, or else he was an Israelite by birth, but called an Ishmaelite, because he had dwelt among the Ishmaelites some time, as Obededom is called the Gittite for the like reason; so Jarchi and Kimchi interpret it.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Jether the Ishmeelite - See the marginal note and reference.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Chronicles 2:17. Jether the Ishmeelite. — "They called him Jether, because he girded himself with his sword, that he might assist David with the Arabians, when Abner was endeavouring to destroy David and the whole race of Jesse, as being unfit to enter into the congregation of the Lord, on account of Ruth the Moabitess." - T.
