The people of Judah had been deported to Babylon as punishment for their sins. 2 The first to return to their property in the cities included Israelite citizens, priests, Levites, and Temple workers. 3 People from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh went to live in Jerusalem. 4There were 690 families of the tribe of Judah who lived in Jerusalem. The descendants of Judah's son Perez had as their leader Uthai, the son of Ammihud and grandson of Omri. His other ancestors included Imri and Bani. The descendants of Judah's son Shelah had as their leader Asaiah, who was the head of his family. The descendants of Judah's son Zerah had Jeuel as their leader. 7The following members of the tribe of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem: Sallu son of Meshullam, who was the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah Ibneiah son of Jeroham Elah, the son of Uzzi and grandson of Michri Meshullam son of Shephatiah, who was the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah 9 There were 956 families of this tribe living there. Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Azariah the son of Hilkiah,.... That is, the son of Azariah, whose name was Seraiah, see 1 Chronicles 6:13, whose pedigree is traced up from Hilkiah through Meshullam, called Shallum, 1 Chronicles 6:12. Zadok, Meraioth, to Ahitub,

the ruler of the house of God; high priest in it; which is to be understood of Ahitub, and not of Azariah or Seraiah in the time of Ezra; for Joshua was then high priest.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Chronicles 9:11. The ruler of the house of God. — The high priest at this time was Jeshua the son of Jozadak, (Ezra 3:8,) and Seraiah, (Nehemiah 11:11,) called here Azariah, was the ruler of the house; the person next in authority to the high priest, and who probably had the guard of the temple and command of the priests, Levites, c. It is likely that the person here was the same as is called the second priest, 1 Chronicles 9:2 1 Chronicles 25:18, who was the sagan or high priest's deputy. 2 Kings 25:18.
