Contextual Overview

1 AND forthwith in the morning the chief priests with the elders and with the scribes and with the whole congregation made council; and they bound Jeshu, and led him and delivered him to Pilatos the governor. 2 And Pilatos asked him, Art thou the King of the Jihudoyee ? And he replied and said to him, Thou hast said. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many (things): 4 but he, Pilatos, asked him again and said to him, Returnest thou not an answer ? see how many are witnessing against thee. 5 But he, Jeshu, did not give any answer; so that Pilatos admired. 6 But he was accustomed at every festival to release to them of the bound one whom they requested; 7 and there was one who was called Bar-aba, who was bound with the makers of sedition, they who murder in the sedition had committed. 8 And the people cried out and began to demand, that as he was used he would do to them. 9 But Pilatos answered and said, Will you that I release to you the King of the Jihudoyee ? 10 For Pilatos knew that for envy the chief priests had delivered him.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But Jesus yet answered nothing,.... He still continued silent, and made no defence for himself, which the governor was willing to give him an opportunity to make, and, as his friend, urged him to it:

so that Pilate marvelled; what should be the meaning of his silence, when he was so capable of defending himself, and was so innocent, as Pilate himself was ready to believe; and yet the things he was charged with were of, the highest nature, and by persons of the greatest figure in the nation; so that his silence exposed him to a great deal of danger, which Pilate thought might easily be avoided by answering for himself; :-.
