Contextual Overview

1 And a certain man was sick, Lazarus of the town of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha. 2 It was that Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume, and wiped [fn] with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 And his two sisters sent to Jesus, and said: Our Lord, he whom thou lovest is sick. 4 And Jesus said: This sickness is not that of death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by means of it. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary, and Lazarus. 6 And when he heard that he was sick, he remained in the place where he was two days. 7 And afterwards he said to his disciples: Come, let us go again into Judaea. 8 His disciples say to him: Our Rabbi, the Jews have just sought to stone thee; and goest thou again thither. 9 Jesus said to them: Are there not twelve hours in the day? And if a man walk in the daytime, he stumbleth not; because he seeth the light of the world. 10 But if one walk in the night, he stumbleth; because there is no light in him.
