Contextual Overview

1 And the Spirit of God came vpon Azariah the sonne of Oded. 2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said vnto him, Heare ye me, Asa, and all Iudah, and Beniamin, The Lord is with you, while yee be with him: and if yee seeke him, he will be found of you: but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you. 3 Now for a long season Israel hath bene without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law. 4 But when they in their trouble did turne vnto the Lord God of Israel, and sought him, hee was found of them. 5 And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were vpon all the inhabitants of the countreys. 6 And nation was destroyed of nation, and citie of citie: for God did vexe them with all aduersitie. 7 Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands bee weake: for your worke shall be rewarded.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city,.... Or one tribe of another; as the Ephraimites by the Gileadites, and the tribe of Benjamin by the other tribes; and Shechem by Abimelech, Judges 9:45,

for God did vex them with all adversity; both with foreign enemies and civil wars; and now it is intimated that this would be their case again, should they not keep close to the Lord their God.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The allusion is probably to the destructions recorded in Judges 9:45; Judges 20:33-48.
