THE MESSAGE
I observed that the Temple had a ten-and-a-half-foot-thick raised base around it, which provided a foundation for the side rooms. The outside walls of the side rooms were eight and three-quarters feet thick. The open area between the side rooms of the Temple and the priests' rooms was a thirty-five-foot-wide strip all around the Temple. There were two entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one placed on the north side, the other on the south. There were eight and three-quarters feet of open space all around.

Contextual Overview

1 Afterward he brought me to the Temple, and measured the posts, six cubites broad on the one side, and sixe cubites broad on the other side, which was the bredth of the Tabernacle. 2 And the bredth of the doore was tenne cubites, and the sides of the doore were fiue cubites on the one side, and fiue cubites on the other side, and he measured the length thereof fortie cubites, and the bredth twentie cubites. 3 Then went he inward, and measured the post of the doore two cubites, and the doore sixe cubites, and the bredth of the doore seuen cubites. 4 So he measured the length therof twentie cubites, and the bredth twentie cubites before the temple, and he said vnto me; This is the most holy place. 5 After he measured the wall of the house sixe cubites, and the bredth of euerie side-chamber foure cubites round about the house on euery side. 6 And the side-chambers were three, one ouer an other, and thirtie in order, and they entred into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might haue hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house. 7 And there was an enlarging and a winding about still vpward to the side-chambers, for the winding about of the house went still vpward round about the house: therefore the bredth of the house was still vpward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the middest. 8 I saw also the height of the house round about; the foundations of the side-chambers were a full reede of sixe great cubites. 9 The thicknesse of the wall which was for the side chamber without, was fiue cubites, and that which was left, was the place of the side-chambers that were within. 10 And betweene the chambers was the widenesse of twentie cubites round about the house on euery side.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

I saw also the height of the house round about,.... Not of the temple itself, but of the chambers, and the three stories of them, which went round about it; and particularly the height of the highest storey, which yet is not given: it could not be so high as the temple itself; for then there would have been no room for windows to let in light into it:

the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits; not of the lowest storey of them, for that was but four cubits broad, Ezekiel 41:5, nor of the middlemost, which was five; but of the uppermost, which was six; and these were cubits of the largest size, a hand's breadth larger than the common cubit, and made one full reed, or three yards and a half; see Ezekiel 40:5, these foundations signify the same as the twelve foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem; and which are no other than the one foundation Christ, ministerially laid by his twelve apostles; and who is the only foundation of his church and people, and is a sure one, Revelation 21:14.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The foundations of the side chambers - Therefore the height of the side-chambers from the floor was six cubits there being three stories, which corresponds sufficiently with the twenty cubits which was the height of the temple. “A great cubit” is probably an architectural term to denote the line of junction between two stories, which would be that of the ceiling of the lower and the floor of the upper story.
