THE MESSAGE
Please get up—wake up! Tend to my case. My God, my Lord—my life is on the line. Do what you think is right, God , my God, but don't make me pay for their good time. Don't let them say to themselves, "Ha-ha, we got what we wanted." Don't let them say, "We've chewed him up and spit him out." Let those who are being hilarious at my expense Be made to look ridiculous. Make them wear donkey's ears; Pin them with the donkey's tail, who made themselves so high and mighty!
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Stir up Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord.

Contextual Overview

17 Lord, how long wilt thou looke on? rescue my soule from their destructions, my darling from the lyons. 18 I will giue thee thankes in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. 19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully, reioyce ouer me: neither let them winke with the eye, that hate me without a cause. 20 For they speake not peace: but they deuise deceitfull matters against them that are quiet in the land. 21 Yea they opened their mouth wide against me, and saide, Aha, Aha, our eye hath seene it. 22 This thou hast seene (O Lord) keepe not silence: O Lord be not farre from me. 23 Stirre vp thy selfe and awake to my iudgement, euen vnto my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Iudge me O Lord my God, according to thy righteousnesse, and let them not reioyce ouer me. 25 Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we haue it: let them not say, We haue swallowed him vp. 26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together, that reioyce at mine hurt: let them bee cloathed with shame and dishonour, that magnifie themselues against me.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Stir up thyself and awake,.... Who seemed to be asleep in the apprehensions of the psalmist, and to take no notice of his distresses, and the insults of his enemies; see Psalms 44:23; he adds,

to my judgment, [even] to my cause; that is, to plead it and maintain it, and avenge him of his enemies, as in Psalms 35:1; making use of his covenant interest in him as a plea for it to engage him to do it, saying,

my God, and my Lord; see Psalms 22:1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Stir up thyself - Arouse thyself as if from sleep. See Psalms 44:23.

And awake to my judgment - To execute judgment for me, or to render me justice. A similar petition (almost in the same words) occurs in Psalms 7:6. See the notes at that passage.

Even unto my cause - In my behalf; or, in the cause which so nearly pertains to me.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Psalms 35:23. Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment — I have delivered my cause into thy hand, and appeal to thee as my Judge; and by thy decision I am most willing to abide.
