Contextual Overview

1 And Solomon the son of David made himself strong over his kingdom, and Jehovah his God was with him, and made him exceedingly great. 2 And Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of the thousands, and of the hundreds, and to judges, and to every honorable one of all Israel, heads of the fathers; 3 and they went, Solomon and all the congregation with him, to the high place that was in Gibeon, for there was God's tabernacle of the congregation that Moses, the servant of Jehovah, had made in the wilderness. 4 But David had brought up the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim, when David made ready for it, for he had stretched out a tent for it in Jerusalem; 5 and the altar of bronze that Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put it before the tabernacle of Jehovah; and Solomon and the congregation sought to it. 6 And Solomon went up there on the bronze altar before Jehovah, that was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered on it a thousand burnt offerings. 7 In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, Ask what I shall give to you. 8 And Solomon said to God, You have acted with great kindness with my father David, and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, O Jehovah God, Your Word with my father David is confirmed, for You have made me to reign over a people as many as the dust of the earth. 10 Now give to me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this, Your great people?

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The verbal differences between this passage and the corresponding one of Kings 1 Kings 3:5-14 are very considerable, and indicate the general truth that the object of the sacred historians is to give a true account of the real bearing of what was said: not ordinarily to furnish us with all or the exact words that were uttered. The most important point omitted in Chronicles, and supplied by Kings, is the conditional promise of long life made to Solomon 1 Kings 3:14; while the chief point absent from Kings, and recorded by our author, is the solemn appeal made by Solomon to the promise of God to David his father 2 Chronicles 1:9, which he now called upon God to “establish,” or to perform.

2 Chronicles 1:12

I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honor - Remark that the writer says nothing of any promise to Solomon of “long life,” which, however, had been mentioned in 2 Chronicles 1:11 among the blessings which he might have been expected to ask. The reason for the omission would seem to lie in the writer’s desire to record only what is good of this great king. Long life was included in the promises made to him; but it was granted conditionally; and Solomon not fulfilling the conditions, it did not take effect (1 Kings 3:14 note).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible
