Contextual Overview

1 And Solomon said to build a house for the name of Jehovah, and a house for his kingdom. 2 And Solomon numbered seventy thousand men, bearers of burden, and eighty thousand men hewing in the mountains; and overseers over them three thousand, six hundred. 3 And Solomon sent to Hiram the king of Tyre, saying, As you dealt with my father David, and sent him cedars to build a house to live in, also 4 behold, I am building a house to the name of Jehovah my God, to dedicate to Him, to burn incense of sweet spices before Him, and for the continual Bread of Arrangement, and for burnt offerings morningand evening, on the sabbath, and on thenew moons, and at the set feasts of Jehovah our God. This shall be upon Israel forever. 5 And the house which I am building shall be great, for our God is greater than all gods. 6 But who has strength to enclose a house for Him, since the heavens and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him? And who am I that I should build Him a house, except to offer before Him? 7 And now, send to me a skilled man to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and violet, and knowing how to engrave all kinds of engravings with the skilled men who are with me in Judah andin Jerusalem, whom my father David has prepared. 8 And send to me cedar trees, firs, and algums from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut down the trees of Lebanon; and behold, my servants shall be with your servants, 9 even to prepare trees in abundance for me, for the house that I am building will be great and wonderful. 10 And behold, I shall give beaten wheat to the hewers, to those cutting down the trees, to your servants, twenty thousand kors of beaten wheat and twenty thousand kors of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths ofoil.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Solomon sent to Huram king of Tyre,.... The same with Hiram, 1 Kings 5:1 and from whence it appears, that Huram first sent a letter to Solomon to congratulate him on his accession to the throne, which is not taken notice of here:

as thou didst deal with my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein; see 1 Chronicles 14:1, even so deal with me; which words are a supplement.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Huram, the form used throughout Chronicles (except 1 Chronicles 14:1) for the name both of the king and of the artisan whom he lent to Solomon 2 Chronicles 2:13; 2Ch 4:11, 2 Chronicles 4:16, is a late corruption of the true native word, Hiram (marginal note and reference).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Chronicles 2:3. Solomon sent to Huram — This man's name is written חירם Chiram in Kings; and in Chronicles, חורם Churam: there is properly no difference, only a י yod and a ו vau interchanged. See on 1 Kings 5:2.
