The gatekeepers got the word to the royal palace, giving them the whole story. Roused in the middle of the night, the king told his servants, "Let me tell you what Aram has done. They knew that we were starving, so they left camp and have hid in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we'll capture them alive and take the city.'"
New American Standard Bible (1995)
The gatekeepers called and told it within the king's household.

Contextual Overview

3 And four men, lepers, were at the gate entrance. And they said to one another, Why should we sit here until we die? 4 If we say, We shall go into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit here, then we shall die. Therefore now, come and we will fall into the camp of Syria. If theykeep us alive, we shall live. And if they killus, then we die. 5 And they rose up in the twilight to go to the Syrian camp. And they came to the edge of the Syrian camp. And, behold, there was not a man there! 6 For the Lord had caused the Syrian army to hear a sound of chariots, and a sound of horses, and a sound of a great army. And they said to one another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites against us, and the kings ofEgypt, to come against us. 7 And they rose up and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, and the camp as it was . And they fled for their life. 8 And these lepers came to the edge of the camp, and came into one tent, and ate and drank, and took up from there silver and gold and garments, and went and hid them. And they returned and went into another tent, and took from there, and wentand hid them . 9 And they said to one another, We are not doing right this day. It is a day of good news, and we are keeping silent. And if we wait until the morning light, then punishment will find us. Andnow come and we will go and tell the house ofthe king. 10 And they came in and called to the gatekeeper of the city, and spoke for themselves, saying, We have come to the camp of Syria. And, behold, there is not a man there, nor voice of man, but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents asthey were . 11 And he called the gatekeepers, and they told the house of the king inside.
