Contextual Overview

22 And Moses made Israel to pull out from the Sea of Reeds. And they went out into the wilderness of Shur. And they went into the wilderness three days, and did not find water. 23 And they came to Marah. And they were not able to drink water from Marah, for it was bitter. Therefore, one called its name Marah. 24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25 And he cried to Jehovah, and Jehovah showed him a tree. And he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. He made a statute and an ordinance for them there, and He tested them there. 26 And He said, If you carefully listen to the voice of Jehovah your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and you give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will not put on you all the diseases which I have put on Egypt; for I am Jehovah your Healer. 27 And they came to Elim. And there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. And they camped by the waters.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the people murmured against Moses,.... For bringing them into a wilderness where they could find no water fit to drink; saying:

what shall we drink? what shall we do for drink? where can we drink? this water is not drinkable, and, unless we have something to drink, we, and our wives, and children, and servants, and cattle, must all perish.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Exodus 15:24. The people murmured — They were in a state of great mental degradation, owing to their long and oppressive vassalage, and had no firmness of character. Exodus 13:17; Exodus 13:17.
