THE MESSAGE
God, the Master, was delighted with Solomon's response. And God said to him, "Because you have asked for this and haven't grasped after a long life, or riches, or the doom of your enemies, but you have asked for the ability to lead and govern well, I'll give you what you've asked for—I'm giving you a wise and mature heart. There's never been one like you before; and there'll be no one after. As a bonus, I'm giving you both the wealth and glory you didn't ask for—there's not a king anywhere who will come up to your mark. And if you stay on course, keeping your eye on the life-map and the God-signs as your father David did, I'll also give you a long life."

Contextual Overview
5In Gibeon, Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, "Ask what I should give to you." 6Then Solomon said, "You have shown great lovingkindness to Your slave David my father, according to how he walked before You in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward You; and You have kept for him this great lovingkindness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7So now, O Yahweh my God, You have made Your slave king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8And Your slave is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a numerous people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9So give Your slave a listening heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this glorious people of Yours?" 10And it was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11And God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to listen to justice, 12behold, I have done according to your words. Behold, I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you. 13I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days. 14Now if you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will prolong your days."

Gill's Notes on the Bible
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Understanding in the affairs of civil government; since he had respect not to his own private benefit and advantage, but the good of the people he governed, and the honour and glory of God, who had set him over them, they being his chosen people, and whose vicegerent he was.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Although Solomon’s choice was made “in a dream” 1 Kings 3:5, we must regard it as springing from his will in some degree, and therefore as indicative of his moral character.
