Contextual Overview

1And the Philistines have fought with Israel, and the men of Israel flee from the face of the Philistines, and fall wounded in Mount Gilboa, 2and the Philistines pursue after Saul, and after his sons, and the Philistines strike Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-Shua, sons of Saul. 3And the battle [is] heavy on Saul, and those shooting with the bow find him, and he is wounded by those shooting, 4and Saul says to the bearer of his weapons, "Draw your sword and pierce me with it, lest these uncircumcised come and have abused me." And the bearer of his weapons has not been willing, for he fears exceedingly, and Saul takes the sword, and falls on it; 5and the bearer of his weapons sees that Saul [is] dead, and falls, he also, on the sword, and dies; 6and Saul dies, and his three sons, and all his house—they died together.7And all the men of Israel who [are] in the valley see that they have fled and that Saul and his sons have died, and they forsake their cities and flee, and the Philistines come and dwell in them.

Saul: 1 Samuel 4:10, 1 Samuel 4:11, 1 Samuel 4:18, 1 Samuel 12:25, Ecclesiastes 9:1, Ecclesiastes 9:2, Hosea 13:10, Hosea 13:11

all his house: "All his men," in Samuel; that is, all who were present with him in the battle; and his family received such a blow, that it never recovered itself again. For though Ishbosheth reigned over a part of the country, yet it was not in any splendour. This history seems to be repeated here as an introduction to that of the kingdom of David.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

All his house died together - Not the whole of his family, nor even “all his sons” (see 2Sa 2:8-15; 2 Samuel 3:6-15; 2 Samuel 4:1-12). The phrase is perhaps an abbreviation of the expression in the parallel passage of Samuel 1 Samuel 31:6.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Chronicles 10:6. So Saul died - and all his house — Every branch of his family that had followed him to the war was cut off; his three sons are mentioned as being the chief. No doubt all his officers were slain.
