Contextual Overview

1And Solomon begins to build the house of YHWH in Jerusalem, on the mount of Moriah where He appeared to his father David, in the place that David had prepared, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, 2and he begins to build in the second [day], in the second month, in the fourth year of his reign. 3And [in] these Solomon has been instructed to build the house of God: the length [in] cubits by the former measure [is] sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. 4As for the porch that [is] on the front, the length [is] by the front of the breadth of the house—twenty cubits, and the height one hundred and twenty [[or twenty]], and he overlays it within with pure gold. 5And he has covered the large house with fir-trees, and he covers it with fine gold, and causes palms and chains to ascend on it, 6and he overlays the house with precious stone for beauty, and the gold [is] gold of Parvaim, 7and he covers the house, the beams, the thresholds, and its walls, and its doors, with gold, and has engraved cherubim on the walls. 8And he makes the most holy house: its length by the front of the breadth of the house—twenty cubits, and its breadth twenty cubits, and he covers it with six hundred talents of fine gold; 9and the weight of the nails [is] fifty shekels of gold, and he has covered the upper chambers with gold.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The upper chambers - Compare 1 Chronicles 28:11. Their position is uncertain. Some place them above the holy of holies, which was ten cubits, or fifteen feet lower than the main building (compare 1 Kings 6:2, 1 Kings 6:20); others, accepting the height of the porch 120 cubits 2 Chronicles 3:4, regard the “upper chambers” or “chamber” ὑπερῷον huperōon, Septuagint), as having been a lofty building erected over the entrance to the temple; others suggest that the chambers intended are simply the uppermost of the three sets of chambers which on three sides surrounded the temple (see 1 Kings 6:5-10). This would seem to be the simplest and best explanation, though we cannot see any reason for the rich ornamentation of these apartments, or for David’s special directions concerning them.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Chronicles 3:9. The weight of the nails was fifty shekelsBolts must be here intended, as it should be preposterous to suppose nails of nearly two pounds' weight.

The supper chambers — Probably the ceiling is meant.
