But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts?
But when Iesus perceiued their thoughts, he answering, saide vnto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

Who can forgive sins but God only? And Jesus knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, Why reason ye in your hearts?
Well aware of their reasonings, Jesus answered their questions by asking in turn, "What is this that you are debating in your hearts?
And as Jhesus knewe the thouytis of hem, he answeride, and seide to hem, What thenken ye yuele thingis in youre hertes?
But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said to them, Why do you reason in your hearts?

Neuertheles wha Iesus perceaued their thoughtes, he answered, and saide vnto the: What thynke ye in yor hertes?
but Jesus perceiving their reflexions, said to them, what do you mean by such insinuations?
Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking and said, "Why all this gossipy whispering? Which is simpler: to say ‘I forgive your sins,' or to say ‘Get up and start walking'? Well, just so it's clear that I'm the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both...." He now spoke directly to the paraplegic: "Get up. Take your bedroll and go home." Without a moment's hesitation, he did it—got up, took his blanket, and left for home, giving glory to God all the way. The people rubbed their eyes, incredulous—and then also gave glory to God. Awestruck, they said, "We've never seen anything like that!"
Jesus already knew what they were thinking so he asked them, "Why are your hearts so bitter?

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts,.... Being God omniscient;
he answering said unto them, what reason ye in your hearts? This he said, not as being ignorant what their reasonings were, for it is before said he perceived their thoughts, but to expose the wickedness of them; in one exemplar of Beza's it is added, "evil things", as in Matthew 9:4.
