Contextual Overview

12And it came to pass in those days, He went forth to the mountain to pray, and was passing the night in the prayer of God, 13and when it became day, He called near His disciples, also having chosen twelve from them, whom He also named apostles: 14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,15Matthew and Thomas, James of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zealot, 16Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became betrayer. 17And having come down with them, He stood on a level spot; and a crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18who came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, [gathered]. And those harassed by unclean spirits [also gathered] and were healed. 19And all the multitude were seeking to touch Him, because power was going forth from Him, and He was healing all.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Simon, whom he also named Peter,.... Which signifies a rock, or stone, as Cephas also does, see John 1:42 from his constancy, steadfastness, and solidity:

and Andrew his brother; who was called at the same time with him, and were brethren, both in nature and grace:

James and John: the two sons of Zebedee, who were called next:

Philip and Bartholomew; the latter of these is by some thought to be Nathanael.
