Contextual Overview

15And he takes up his allegory and says: "An affirmation of Balaam son of Beor, || And an affirmation of the man whose eyes [are] shut; 16An affirmation of him who is hearing sayings of God, || And knowing knowledge of the Most High; He sees a vision of the Almighty, || Falling—and eyes uncovered: 17I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A star has proceeded from Jacob, || And a scepter has risen from Israel, || And has struck corners of Moab, || And has destroyed all sons of Seth. 18And Edom has been a possession, || And Seir has been a possession [for] his enemies, || And Israel is doing valiantly; 19And [One] rules out of Jacob, || And has destroyed a remnant from the city." 20And he sees Amalek, and takes up his allegory, and says: "Amalek [is] first [among] nations, || But his latter end—destruction forever." 21And he sees the Kenite, and takes up his allegory, and says: "Your dwelling [is] enduring, || And your nest is being set in a rock, 22But the Kenite is for a burning; Until when does Asshur keep you captive?"23And he takes up his allegory and says: "Woe! Who lives when God does this? 24But ships [come] from the side of Chittim, || And they have humbled Asshur, || And they have humbled Eber, || But it is also perishing forever."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted,.... Though they were so strongly fortified, and closely immured and surrounded with rocks and mountains, yet they should gradually waste away, as they were but few in Saul's time, 1 Samuel 15:6

until Ashur shall carry thee away captive; Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria, when he carried captive the people of Syria, took these with them, 2 Kings 16:9, though Jarchi thinks they were carried captives with the ten tribes, that is, by Shalmaneser, king of Assyria; and the Targum of Jonathan, by Sennacherib, king of Assyria; and others think by Nebuchadnezzar, who was sometimes reckoned a king of Assyria; taking them to be the same with the Amalekites, who were carried captives and returned with the two tribes.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Render, For Kain shall surely not be destroyed (literally “be for destruction”) until Asshur, etc. The words are not, as they appear in the King James Version, a prediction of evil to the Kenites, but a promise, on the contrary, of safety to be long continued to them (compare Numbers 10:32; Jeremiah 35:19).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Numbers 24:22. Until Asshur shall carry thee away captive. — The Assyrians and Babylonians who carried away captive the ten tribes, 2 Kings 17:6, and the Jews into Babylon, 2 Kings 25:1; 2 Kings 25:11, probably carried away the Kenites also. Indeed this seems pretty evident, as we find some Kenites mentioned among the Jews after their return from the Babylonish captivity, 1 Chronicles 2:55.
