THE MESSAGE
God , thoroughly fed up, sent word through his servants the prophets: "Because Manasseh king of Judah has committed these outrageous sins, eclipsing the sin-performance of the Amorites before him, setting new records in evil, using foul idols to debase Judah into a nation of sinners, this is my judgment, God 's verdict: I, the God of Israel, will visit catastrophe on Jerusalem and Judah, a doom so terrible that when people hear of it they'll shake their heads in disbelief, saying, ‘I can't believe it!'
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Now the LORD spoke through His servants the prophets, saying,

Contextual Overview

10 Then spake the LORDE by his seruauntes the prophetes, and saide: 11 Because that Manasse the kynge of Iuda hath gone these abhominacions, which are worse then all ye abhominacions that the Amorites haue done which were before them, and hath caused Iuda also to synne agaynst their God, 12 therfore thus sayeth the LORDE God of Israel: Beholde, I wyll brynge soch a plage vpon Ierusalem and Iuda, that who so euer heareth it, both his eares shal glowe, 13 and ouer Ierusalem wyll I stretch forth the lyne of Samaria, and the weighte of the house of Achab, and wyll wype out Ierusalem, euen as one wypeth a platter, and I wyl ouerthrowe it. 14 And ye remnaunt of myne inheritaunce wil I cast out, & scater them abrode, & wil delyuer them in to the hades of their enemies, to be spoyled and rent of all their enemies: 15 because they haue done yt which is euell in my sighte, & haue prouoked me vnto wrath, sence the daye that I broughte their fathers out of Egipte, vnto this daye. 16 Manasses also shed exceadinge moch innocet bloude, so longe tyll Ierusale was full on euery syde, without the synnes wherwith he caused Iuda for to synne, so yt they dyd that which was euell in the sighte of the LORDE. 17 What more there is to saie of Manasses, and all that he dyd, and his synnes which he commytted, beholde, it is wrytten in the Cronicles of the kynges of Iuda. 18 And Manasses fell on slepe with his fathers, and was buried in the garden besyde his house, namely, in the garden of Vsa, and Amon his sonne was kynge in his steade.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

2 Chronicles 33:10, 2 Chronicles 36:15, Nehemiah 9:26, Nehemiah 9:30, Matthew 23:34-37, In the following verses the doom of Judah and Jerusalem is passed, and it is a heavy doom. The prophets were sent in the first place to teach them the knowledge of God, to remind them of their duty, and direct them in it: if they succeeded not in that, their next work was to reprove them for their sins, and to set them in view before them, that they might repent and reform, and return to their duty: if in this they prevailed not, their next work was to foretell the judgments of God, that the terror of them might awaken to repentance those who would not be made sensible of the obligations of his love; or else that the execution of them, in their season, might be a demonstration of the divine mission of the prophets who foretold them. They were made judges to those who would not hear and receive them as teachers. - Henry.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the Lord spake by his servants the prophets,.... Who prophesied in the days of Manasseh; and were, according to the Jewish chronology f, Joel, Nahum, and Habakkuk:

saying: as follows.

f Seder Olam Rabba, c. 20. p. 55.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The prophets - None of the prophets of this reign are certainly known. One may possibly have been Hosai or Hozai (2 Chronicles 33:19, margin), who perhaps wrote a life of Manasseh.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Kings 21:10. The Lord spake by - the prophets — The prophets were Hosea, Joel, Nahum, Habakkuk, and Isaiah. These five following verses contain the sum of what these prophets spoke. It is said that Isaiah not only prophesied in those days, but also that he was put to death by Manasseh, being sawn asunder by a wooden saw.
