Contextual Overview

1 And we turned vs, & wente vp ye waie vnto Basan. And Og ye kynge of Basan, came out wt all his people to fight agaynst vs at Edrei. 2 But the LORDE sayde vnto me: Be not afrayed of him, for I haue delyuered him & all his people wt his londe in to thy hande: & thou shalt do wt him, as thou dyddest wt Sihon kynge of ye Amorites, which dwelt at Heßbon. 3 Thus ye LORDE oure God delyuered Og ye kynge of Basan in to oure handes also with all his people: so that we smote him, tyll there was nothinge left ouer vnto him. 4 Then wanne we at the same tyme all his cities, & there was not one cite that we toke not from him, euen thre score cities, the whole region of Argob in the kyngdome of Og at Basan. 5 All these cities were stroge, with hye walles, gates, and barres, besyde many other vnwalled townes. 6 And we vtterly destroyed them, as we dyd with Sihon the kynge at Heßbon. All the cities destroyed we vtterly, and the men, wemen, and children. 7 But all the catell and spoyle of the cities caughte we for oureselues. 8 Thus toke we at the same tyme the londe out of the honde of the two kynges of the Amorites beyonde Iordane, from the ryuer of Arnon vnto mount Hermon 9 (which the Sidons call Sirion, but the Amorites call it Senir) 10 all the cities vpon the playne, and all Gilead, and all Basan vnto Salcha and Edrei, the cities of the kyngdome of Og at Basan.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

Bashan: Bashan, one of the most fertile districts of the Holy Land, was bounded on the west by the Jordan and lake of Gennesareth, on the east by Trachonitis, on the south by the brook Jabbok, and on the north by mount Hermon; and seems to have been composed of two or three districts, on the south the land of Gilead, on the north the region of Argob, and east of both, the plain of Hauran. - See note on Deuteronomy 3:13, see note on Deuteronomy 3:14, and see note on Deuteronomy 3:15. The scenery of this elevated tract is described by Mr. Buckingham as extremely beautiful: its plains covered with a fertile soil; its hills covered with forests, and at every new turn presenting the most beautiful landscapes that can be imagined.

Og: Deuteronomy 1:4, Deuteronomy 4:47, Deuteronomy 29:7, Deuteronomy 31:4, Numbers 21:33-35, Joshua 9:10, Joshua 12:4, Joshua 13:30, 1 Kings 4:19, Nehemiah 9:22, Psalms 135:10, Psalms 135:11, Psalms 136:20

Edrei: This town is placed by Eusebius about 25 miles northward from Bostri; and mentioned by Burckhardt under the name of Draa.

Reciprocal: Exodus 14:6 - people Numbers 32:33 - the kingdom Deuteronomy 2:12 - as Israel did Deuteronomy 4:38 - as Deuteronomy 29:16 - through the nations Joshua 2:10 - what ye did Joshua 22:4 - get Joshua 24:8 - General Judges 11:19 - General

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan,.... Which seems to have been higher than the kingdom of Sihon: this was a fine country for pasturage, for the breeding of cattle, larger and lesser, and was famous for its oaks: it is the same country which in Josephus and others goes by the name of Batanea:

and Og the king of Bashan came out against us; got his forces together, and came out from Ashteroth, the royal city where he dwelt:

he and all his people, to battle at Edrei; another city in his kingdom, about six miles from the former; see Deuteronomy 1:4.
