THE MESSAGE
God 's Message came to me: "Son of man, speak to your people. Tell them, ‘If I bring war on this land and the people take one of their citizens and make him their watchman, and if the watchman sees war coming and blows the trumpet, warning the people, then if anyone hears the sound of the trumpet and ignores it and war comes and takes him off, it's his own fault. He heard the alarm, he ignored it—it's his own fault. If he had listened, he would have saved his life.

¹ Agayne, the worde off the LORDE came vnto me, sayenge: ² Thou sonne off man, Speake to the childre of thy people, and tell them: When I sende a swearde vpon a londe, yf the people off the londe take a man off their countre, and set him to be their watchman: ³ ye same man (wha he seyth the swearde come vpon the londe) shall blowe the trompet, and warne the people. ⁴ Yff a man now heare the noyse off the trompet & will not be warned, and the swearde come ad take him awaye: his bloude shall be vpo his owne heade: ⁵ For he herde the soude of the trompet, and wolde not take hede, therfore his bloude be vpon him. But yff he will receaue warnynge, he shal saue his life. ⁶ Agayne, yf the watch man se the swerde come, and shewe it not with the trompet, so yt the people is not warned: yff the swearde come then, and take eny man from amoge the: the same shall be taken awaye in his owne synne, but his bloude will I requyre off the watchmans honde. ⁷ And now (O thou sonne of man) I haue made the a watchman vnto the house of Israel: that where as thou hearest eny thinge out of my mouth, thou mayest warne them on my behalfe. ⁸ Yff I saye vnto the wicked: thou wicked, thou shalt surely dye: and thou geuest him not warnynge, that he maye bewarre off his vngodly waye: then shall the wicked dye in his owne synne, but his bloude will I requyre of thy honde. ⁹ Neuertheles yf thou warne the wicked off his waye, to turne from it, where as he yet wil not be turned from it: then shal he dye because off his synne, but thou hast delyuered thy soule.

CHAPTER XXXIII

The prophet, after having addressed several other nations,

returns now to his own; previously to which he is told, as on a

former occasion, the duty of a watchman, the salvation or ruin

of whose soul depends on the manner in which he discharges it.

An awful passage indeed; full of important instruction both to

such as speak, and to such as hear, the word of God, 1-9.

The prophet is then directed what answer to make to the cavils

of infidelity and impiety; and to vindicate the equity of the

Divine government by declaring the general terms of acceptance

with God to be (as told before, Ezekiel 18:3; Ezekiel 18:4 c.,)

without respect of persons so that the ruin of the finally

impenitent must be entirely owing to themselves, 10-20.

The prophet receives the news of the destruction of Jerusalem

by the Chaldeans, about a year and four months after it

happened, according to the opinion of some, who have been led

to this conjecture by the date given to this prophecy in the

twenty-first verse, as it stands in our common Version: but

some of the manuscripts of this prophet consulted by Dr.

Kennicott have in this place the ELEVENTH year, which is

probably the genuine reading. To check the vain confidence of

those who expected to hold out by possessing themselves of its

other fastnesses, the utter desolation of all Judea is

foretold, 21-29.

Ezekiel is informed that among those that attended his

instructions were a great number of hypocrites, against whom he

delivers a most awful message. When the Lord is destroying

these hypocrites, then shall they know that there hath been a

prophet among them, 30-33.
