Contextual Overview

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they went to the sepulchre with the spices they had provided, accompanied by several others. 2 and having found that the stone had been remov'd from the sepulchre, they entred in, 3 but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 whilst they were in great perplexity about it, all of a sudden, two men appear'd before them in robes of light. 5 upon which they were frightned, and bowed themselves to the very ground: but the men said to them, why do you look among the dead for one that is alive? 6 he is not here, but is risen: remember what he told you, when he was yet in Galilee, 7 that the son of man must be deliver'd into the hands of sinful men; be crucified; and the third day rise again. then they remembred his words; 9 and upon their return from the sepulchre, they related the whole matter to the eleven, and all the other disciples. 10 it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and others with them, who gave the apostles this relation: 11 which however appear'd to them such a delirious tale, they could not give credit to any of them.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And they remembered his words. That is, the words of Christ, as the Persic version expresses it; which they had forgot, and it may be had never truly understood until now; and had now their memories refreshed with them by the angels, and their understandings opened by the Spirit of God. Saints are sometimes apt to forget even the gracious promises of God, they have understood and received comfort from; the word, or words, on which they have been caused to hope, until the Spirit of God, who is their best remembrancer, puts them in mind of them.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See the notes at Matthew 28:1-11.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Luke 24:8. They remembered his words. — Even the simple recollection of the words of Christ becomes often a source of comfort and support to those who are distressed or tempted: for his words are the words of eternal life.
