Cross-References
The serpent told the Woman, "You won't die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you'll see what's really going on. You'll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil."
When the Woman saw that the tree looked like good eating and realized what she would get out of it—she'd know everything!—she took and ate the fruit and then gave some to her husband, and he ate.
God called to the Man: "Where are you?"
He said, "I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid."
The Man said, "The Woman you gave me as a companion, she gave me fruit from the tree, and, yes, I ate it." God said to the Woman, "What is this that you've done?"
Joseph accused them: "How can you have done this? You have to know that a man in my position would have discovered this."
Samuel said, "What on earth are you doing?" Saul answered, "When I saw I was losing my army from under me, and that you hadn't come when you said you would, and that the Philistines were poised at Micmash, I said, ‘The Philistines are about to come down on me in Gilgal, and I haven't yet come before God asking for his help.' So I took things into my own hands, and sacrificed the burnt offering."
Joab went straight to the king: "What's this you've done? Abner shows up, and you let him walk away scot-free? You know Abner son of Ner better than that. This was no friendly visit. He was here to spy on you, figure out your comings and goings, find out what you're up to."
Pilate said, "Do I look like a Jew? Your people and your high priests turned you over to me. What did you do?"
Gill's Notes on the Bible
Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob,.... The prophets and priests, whose business it was to speak to the people from the Lord, and declare his will to them, and to admonish them of their sin and danger, are here called upon to hearken to what the Lord was about to say, and to testify and publish it to the people of Israel, the posterity of Jacob, though sadly degenerated:
saith the Lord God, the God of hosts; the eternal Jehovah, the Being of beings, the God of the whole earth, the God of the armies above and below; and, being so great, ought to be heard with the greatest attention and reverence in what follows.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Hear ye and testify ye in - (Rather unto or against ) the house of Israel; first âhearâ yourselves, then âtestify,â that is, solemnly âprotest,â in the Name of God; and âbear witness untoâ and âagainstâ them, so that the solemn words may sink into them. It is of little avail to âtestfy,â unless we first âhear;â nor can man âbear witnessâ to what he doth not know; nor will words make an âimpression,â that is, leave a trace of themselves, be stamped in or on peopleâs souls, unless the soul which utters them have first hearkened unto them.
Saith the Lord God of hosts - âSo thundereth, as it were, the authority of the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of the shepherd. Foretelling and protesting the destruction of the altar of Bethel, he sets his God against the god whom Israel had chosen as theirs and worshiped there, âthe Lord God of hosts,â against âthe similitude of a calf that eateth hayâ Psalms 106:20. Not I, a shepherd, but so speaketh my God against your god.â
