THE MESSAGE
But Jehoshaphat king of Judah got home safe and sound. Jehu, son of Hanani the seer, confronted King Jehoshaphat: "You have no business helping evil, cozying up to God -haters. Because you did this, God is good and angry with you. But you're not all bad—you made a clean sweep of the polluting sex-and-religion shrines; and you were single-minded in seeking God."
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Then Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned in safety to his house in Jerusalem.

Contextual Overview

1 Jehoshaphat king of Judah came back safely to his palace in Jerusalem. 2 Jehu son of Hanani, a seer, went out to meet him and said to the king, "Why did you help evil people? Why do you love those who hate the Lord ? That is the reason the Lord is angry with you. 3 But there is some good in you. You took the Asherah idols out of this country, and you have tried to obey God." 4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. He went out again to be with the people, from Beersheba to the mountains of Ephraim, and he turned them back to the Lord , the God of their ancestors.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned,.... From Ramothgilead, after Ahab was slain:

to his house in peace in Jerusalem; to his palace there in safety, having narrowly escaped losing his life in the battle.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Jehoshaphat ... returned to his house in peace - With the battle of Ramoth-Gilead, and the death of Ahab, the war came to an end. The combined attack of the two kings having failed, their troops had been withdrawn, and the enterprise in which they had joined relinquished. The Syrians, satisfied with their victory, did not press on the retreating foe, or carry the war into their enemies’ country.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XIX

Jehoshaphat, on his return from Ramoth-gilead, is met by the

prophet Jehu, and reproved, 1-3.

He makes a farther reformation in the land, establishing courts

of justice, and giving solemn and pertinent directions to the

judges, Levites, &c., to do judgement and justice among the

people, in the fear of God, 4-11.

NOTES ON CHAP. XIX

Verse 2 Chronicles 19:1. Returned to his house in peace — That is, in safety, notwithstanding he had been exposed to a danger so imminent, from which only the especial mercy of God could have saved him.
