THE MESSAGE
"Therefore, say to the house of Israel: ‘ God , the Master, says, Repent! Turn your backs on your no-god idols. Turn your backs on all your outrageous obscenities. To every last person from the house of Israel, including any of the resident aliens who live in Israel—all who turn their backs on me and embrace idols, who install the wickedness that will ruin them at the center of their lives and then have the gall to go to the prophet to ask me questions—I, God , will step in and give the answer myself. I'll oppose those people to their faces, make an example of them—a warning lesson—and get rid of them so you will realize that I am God .

Contextual Overview

1 Some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me. 2 Then the Lord spoke his word to me, saying: 3 "Human, these people want to worship idols. They put up evil things that cause people to sin. Should I allow them to ask me for help? 4 So speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: When any of the people of Israel want to worship idols and put up evil things that cause people to sin and then come to the prophet, I, the Lord , will answer them myself for worshiping idols. 5 Then I will win back my people Israel, who have left me because of all their idols.' 6 "So say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: Change your hearts and lives, and stop worshiping idols. Stop doing all the things I hate. 7 Any of the Israelites or foreigners in Israel can separate themselves from me by wanting to worship idols or by putting up the things that cause people to sin. Then if they come to the prophet to ask me questions, I, the Lord , will answer them myself. 8 I will reject them. I will make them a sign and an example, and I will separate them from my people. Then you will know that I am the Lord . 9 "‘But if the prophet is tricked into giving a prophecy, it is because I, the Lord , have tricked that prophet to speak. Then I will use my power against him and destroy him from among my people Israel. 10 The prophet will be as guilty as the one who asks him for help; both will be responsible for their guilt.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Therefore say unto the house of Israel,.... Deliver out the following exhortation to repentance unto them; for God's end, in all his threatenings and judgments, is to bring men to repentance:

thus saith the Lord God, repent, and turn [yourselves] from your idols; or, "turn, and cause to be turned from your idols" w; turn yourselves from the worship of idols, as the Targum, and do all that in you lies to turn others from the same; particularly your wives and young men, as Kimchi: and the rather they were obliged to do this, since in all probability they had been the means of drawing them into idolatry:

and turn away your faces from all your abominations; their idols, detestable to God, and ought to have been so to them; these he would have them turn their faces from, not so much as look at them, much less worship them, that they might not be ensnared by them; this is said, in opposition to their setting of them before their face, Ezekiel 14:3.
