¹ The Lord spoke his word to me, saying: ² "Human, sing a funeral song for the city of Tyre. ³ Speak to Tyre, which has ports for the Mediterranean Sea and is a place for trade for the people of many lands along the seacoast. ‘This is what the Lord God says: Tyre, you have said, "I am like a beautiful ship." ⁴ You were at home on the high seas. Your builders made your beauty perfect. ⁵ They made all your boards of fir trees from Mount Hermon. They took a cedar tree from Lebanon to make a ship's mast for you. ⁶ They made your oars from oak trees from Bashan. They made your deck from cypress trees from the coast of Cyprus and set ivory into it. ⁷ Your sail of linen with designs sewed on it came from Egypt and became like a flag for you. Your cloth shades over the deck were blue and purple and came from the island of Cyprus. ⁸ Men from Sidon and Arvad used oars to row you. Thy borders are in the midst of the seas, Fixed by the Lord himself, and which could never be removed. Tyre stood about half a mile from the continent, surrounded with the waters of the sea, till it was made a peninsula by Alexander:

thy builders have perfected thy beauty. The Sidonians were the first builders of the city, as Justin q says; who began and carried on the building of it to the utmost of their knowledge and skill; and which was afterwards perfected by other builders, who made it the most beautiful city in all those parts; unless this is to be understood of her shipbuilders, who brought the art of building ships in her to such a perfection, as made her famous throughout the world; since they are immediately spoken of without any other antecedent.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Ezekiel 27:4. Thy builders have perfected thy beauty. — Under the allegory of a beautiful ship, the prophet, here and in the following verses, paints the glory of this ancient city. Horace describes the commonwealth of Rome by the same allegory, and is as minute in his description, Carm. lib. i. Od. xiv: -

O navis, referent in mare te novi

Fluctus? O quid agis? Fortiter occupa

Portum. Nonne video, ut

Nudum remigio latus,

Et malus celeri saucius Africo,

Antennaeque gemant? ac sine funibus

Vix durare carinae

Possint imperiosius

AEquor! non tibi sunt integra lintea;

Non Di, quos iterum pressa votes malo:
