THE MESSAGE
The moment she heard that, she jumped up and ran out to him. Jesus had not yet entered the town but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When her sympathizing Jewish friends saw Mary run off, they followed her, thinking she was on her way to the tomb to weep there. Mary came to where Jesus was waiting and fell at his feet, saying, "Master, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died."

¹⁷ When Jesus arrived, he learned that Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. ¹⁸ Bethany was about two miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁹ Many of the Jews had come there to comfort Martha and Mary about their brother. ²⁰ When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed home. ²¹ Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. ²² But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask." ²³ Jesus said, "Your brother will rise and live again." ²⁴ Martha answered, "I know that he will rise and live again in the resurrection on the last day." ²⁵ Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.
