THE MESSAGE
Samuel addressed all Israel: "I've listened to everything you've said to me, listened carefully to every word, and I've given you a king. See for yourself: Your king among you, leading you! But now look at me: I'm old and gray, and my sons are still here. I've led you faithfully from my youth until this very day. Look at me! Do you have any complaints to bring before God and his anointed? Have I ever stolen so much as an ox or a donkey? Have I ever taken advantage of you or exploited you? Have I ever taken a bribe or played fast and loose with the law? Bring your complaint and I'll make it right."
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Then Samuel said to all Israel, "Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me and I have appointed a king over you.

Contextual Overview

1 Samuel said to all Israel, "I have done everything you requested. I have given you a king. 2 Now look! This king walks before you. As for me, I am old and gray, though my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from the time of my youth till the present day. 3 Here I am. Bring a charge against me before the Lord and before his chosen king. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I wronged? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I taken a bribe so that I would overlook something? Tell me, and I will return it to you!" 4 They replied, "You have not wronged us or oppressed us. You have not taken anything from the hand of anyone." 5 He said to them, "The Lord is witness against you, and his chosen king is witness this day, that you have not found any reason to accuse me." They said, "He is witness!"

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Samuel said unto all Israel,.... When assembled at Gilgal, after they had recognized Saul as their king, and he was established in the kingdom, and while in the midst of their mirth and joy:

behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye have said unto me; respecting the affair of a king, to which it must be limited, as appears by what follows; otherwise it is possible, in some things they might apply to him about, he did not think fit to hearken to them, and grant their request, or speak for them:

and have made a king over you; that is, had by the direction and appointment of God chosen one by lot, anointed and declared him king; for it was the Lord alone, that, properly speaking, made him a king.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XII

Samuel, grown old, testifies his integrity before the people,

which they confirm, 1-5.

He reproves them for their ingratitude and disobedience; and

gives a summary of the history of their fathers, 6-12.

He exhorts them to future obedience, and calls for a sign from

heaven to confirm his authority, and to show them their

disobedience: God sends an extraordinary thunder and rain,

13-19.

He warns them against idolatry, and exhorts to obedience, and

promises to intercede for them, 20-23.

Sums up their duty, and concludes with a solemn warning, 24, 25.

NOTES ON CHAP. XII

Verse 1 Samuel 12:1. And Samuel said — It is very likely that it was at this public meeting Samuel delivered the following address; no other time seems to be given for it, and this is the most proper that could be chosen.
