Bible Verse Review
from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge
Ye are witnesses: Ye have been sufficiently apprised of the difficulties in your way - of God's holiness, and the nature of his service - your own weakness, inconstancy, and insufficiency - your need of the Divine help, and the hope of assistance held out in the law - and the awful consequences of apostasy, and now ye make your choice. Remember then that ye are witnesses against yourselves; and your own conscience will be witness, judge, and executioner. Deuteronomy 26:17, Job 15:6, Luke 19:22

Cross-References
Abraham said to his servant, the senior one in his household who was in charge of everything he had, "Put your hand under my thigh
so that I may make you solemnly promise by the Lord , the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living.
So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and gave his solemn promise he would carry out his wishes.
Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed with all kinds of gifts from his master at his disposal. He journeyed to the region of Aram Naharaim and the city of Nahor.
He made the camels kneel down by the well outside the city. It was evening, the time when the women would go out to draw water.
He prayed, "O Lord , God of my master Abraham, guide me today. Be faithful to my master Abraham.
Before he had finished praying, there came Rebekah with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah (Milcah was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor).
Now the young woman was very beautiful. She was a virgin; no man had ever had sexual relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came back up.
When she had done so, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have drunk as much as they want."
"Whose daughter are you?" he asked. "Tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?"
Gill's Notes on the Bible
And Joshua said unto the people,.... In reply to their answer and resolution:
ye [are] witnesses against yourselves, that ye have chosen you the Lord God to serve him; that is, should they, after this choice of him, which they had so publicly declared, desert his service, and go into idolatry, their testimony would rise up against them, and they would, be self-condemned:
and they said, [we are] witnesses; should we ever apostatize from the Lord and his worship, we are content to have this our witness produced against us.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Joshua 24:22. Ye are witnesses against yourselves — Ye have been sufficiently apprised of the difficulties in your way - of GOD'S holiness - your own weakness and inconstancy - the need you have of Divine help, and the awful consequences of apostasy; and now ye deliberately make your choice. Remember then, that ye are witnesses against yourselves, and your own conscience will be witness, judge, and executioner; or, as one terms it, index, judex, vindex.
