Tell this company of rebels a story: "‘Put on the soup pot. Fill it with water. Put chunks of meat into it, all the choice pieces—loin and brisket. Pick out the best soup bones from the best of the sheep in the flock. Pile wood beneath the pot. Bring it to a boil and cook the soup.

1 On January 15, during the ninth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity, this message came to me from the Lord : 2 "Son of man, write down today's date, because on this very day the king of Babylon is beginning his attack against Jerusalem. 3 Then give these rebels an illustration with this message from the Sovereign Lord : "Put a pot on the fire, and pour in some water. 4 Fill it with choice pieces of meat— the rump and the shoulder and all the most tender cuts. 5 Use only the best sheep from the flock, and heap fuel on the fire beneath the pot. Bring the pot to a boil, and cook the bones along with the meat. 6 "Now this is what the Sovereign Lord says: What sorrow awaits Jerusalem, the city of murderers! She is a cooking pot whose corruption can't be cleaned out. Take the meat out in random order, for no piece is better than another. 7 For the blood of her murders is splashed on the rocks. It isn't even spilled on the ground, where the dust could cover it! 8 So I will splash her blood on a rock for all to see, an expression of my anger and vengeance against her. 9 "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: What sorrow awaits Jerusalem, the city of murderers! I myself will pile up the fuel beneath her. 10 Yes, heap on the wood! Let the fire roar to make the pot boil. Cook the meat with many spices, and afterward burn the bones.

Again, in the ninth year,.... Of Jehoiachin's captivity, from which the dates of Ezekiel are, and of Zedekiah's reign, which commenced together:

The prophecies in this chapter were delivered two years and five months after those of the previous section Ezekiel 20:1. The day mentioned here was the very day on which Nebuchadnezzar completed his arrangements for the siege, and closed in the city (marginal references). After the captivity this day was regularly observed as a fast day Zechariah 8:19.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
CHAPTER XXIV
The prophet now informs those of the captivity of the very day
on which Nebuchadnezzar was to lay siege to Jerusalem,
(compare Jeremiah 52:4,)
and describes the fate of that city and its inhabitants by a
very apt similitude, 1-14.
As another sign of the greatness of those calamities the
prophet is forbidden to mourn for his wife, of whom he is to be
deprived; intimating thereby that the sufferings of the Jews
should be so astonishing as to surpass all expressions of
grief; and that private sorrow however affectionate and tender
the object, ought to be absorbed in the public calamities,
15-18.
The prophet, having farther expressed his prediction in plain
terms, intimates that he was to speak to them no more till they
should have the news of these prophecies having been fulfilled,
19-27.

Verse Ezekiel 24:1. The ninth year — This prophecy was given in the ninth year of Zedekiah, about Thursday, the thirtieth of January, A.M. 3414; the very day in which the king of Babylon commenced the siege of Jerusalem.
