THE MESSAGE
God 's Message came to me: "Son of man, confront Mount Seir. Prophesy against it! Tell them, ‘ God , the Master, says: "‘I'm coming down hard on you, Mount Seir. I'm stepping in and turning you to a pile of rubble. I'll reduce your towns to piles of rocks. There'll be nothing left of you. Then you'll realize that I am God .

Contextual Overview

1 Again a message came to me from the Lord : 2 "Son of man, turn and face Mount Seir, and prophesy against its people. 3 Give them this message from the Sovereign Lord : "I am your enemy, O Mount Seir, and I will raise my fist against you to destroy you completely. 4 I will demolish your cities and make you desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord . 5 "Your eternal hatred for the people of Israel led you to butcher them when they were helpless, when I had already punished them for all their sins. 6 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord , since you show no distaste for blood, I will give you a bloodbath of your own. Your turn has come! 7 I will make Mount Seir utterly desolate, killing off all who try to escape and any who return. 8 I will fill your mountains with the dead. Your hills, your valleys, and your ravines will be filled with people slaughtered by the sword. 9 I will make you desolate forever. Your cities will never be rebuilt. Then you will know that I am the Lord .

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me,.... After the prophecy concerning the shepherds of Israel, and the goats of the flock, and of their oppressions of the sheep and lambs, the weak of the flock; and concerning the Messiah, and the blessings of grace promised the church in the latter day; came another concerning the destruction of her enemies, under the name of Seir or Edom:

saying: as follows:

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In Ezek. 35–36 we see the devastation of Edom, and the restoration of Israel. Edom was included among the nations against which Ezekiel prophesied Ezekiel 25:12-14. But its fuller doom was reserved for this place, because Edom was one of the surrounding nations that profited at first by Judah’s fall, and because it helps by way of contrast to bring out in a marked way the better future designed for Israel. Edom is the God-hating, God-opposing power, ever distinguished for its bitter hatred against Israel; and so the ruin of Edom is the triumph of Israel in the power of God.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXXV

The prophet having formerly predicted the ruin of Edom, the

same with Seir, (Ezekiel 25:12,)

now resumes and pursues the subject at greater length,

intimating, as did also Isaiah, (Isaiah 21:11-12,)

that though other nations should recover their liberty after

the fall of the Babylonian monarchy, the Edomites should

continue in bondage for their very despiteful behaviour towards

the children of Israel in the day of their calamity, 1-15.
