Contextual Overview

1 The sons of Israel were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Napthali, Gad, and Asher. 3 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bath-shua of Canaan. Judah's first-born son Er was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death. 4 Judah's daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all. 5 The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 6 The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara, five in all. 7 Carmi's son was Achar, who brought trouble to Israel by sinning against what was holy. 8 The son of Ethan was Azariah. 9 The sons born to Hezron were Jerahmeel, Ram and Chelubai. 10 Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, the leader of the sons of Judah.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the sons of Ethan; Azariah. Including his posterity, see

Genesis 46:23, the posterity of the other three sons of Zerah are not mentioned, either because the writer could not find the genealogy of them, as Kimchi; or rather, as he thinks, he cuts short the genealogy of Zerah, because the kingdom did not proceed from him, and returns to the genealogy of Hezron, from whence it did, or perhaps they had no children.
