Contextual Overview

1 The gate-keepers were divided up. Of the Korahites there was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, a son of Asaph. 2 Meshelemiah's sons were Zechariah the first-born, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth. 3 Elam was his fifth son, Johanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh. 4 Obed-edom's sons were Shemaiah the first-born, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth. 5 Ammiel was his sixth son, Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth. God had brought good to the father. 6 To his son Shemaiah sons were born who ruled over their father's house. They were strong, able men with strength of heart. 7 The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad. Their brothers, Elihu and Semachiah, were strong and able men. 8 All these were sons of Obed-edom. They and their sons and brothers were able men with strength for the work. There were sixty-two men from Obed-edom. 9 Meshelemiah had sons and brothers, eighteen strong and able men. 10 These are the sons of Hosah, one of Merari's sons: Shimri was the first. (He was not the first-born, but his father made him first.)

Gill's Notes on the Bible

These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari. For among those Levites which descended from Kore, a grandson of Kohath, and which sprung from Merar, a brother of Kohath, the porters only wore; see 1 Chronicles 26:1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The divisions of the porters - The account of the porters here given makes them only twenty-four in number at any one time; 1 Chronicles 23:5 states that the duty was discharged by 4,000 persons. Perhaps of the 93 chief porters here spoken of 1 Chronicles 26:8-9, 1 Chronicles 26:11, 1 Chronicles 26:24 were always on guard as officers, while of the remaining 3,907, a certain proportion were each day on duty as their subordinates.
