"‘Your sailors row mightily, taking you into the high seas. Then a storm out of the east shatters your ship in the ocean deep. Everything sinks—your rich goods and products, sailors and crew, ship's carpenters and soldiers, Sink to the bottom of the sea. Total shipwreck. The cries of your sailors reverberate on shore. Sailors everywhere abandon ship. Veteran seamen swim for dry land. They cry out in grief, a choir of bitter lament over you. They smear their faces with ashes, shave their heads, Wear rough burlap, wildly keening their loss. They raise their funeral song: "Who on the high seas is like Tyre!"

The east wind has wrecked you far out in the sea. 27 Your riches, your good things, the things you trade, your sailors, your pilots, your builders, your traders, all your soldiers, and all your people will fall into the sea on the day you are destroyed. 28 The lands by the sea will shake at the sound of your sailors' cry. 29 All the rowers and sailors of the sea will leave their ships. They will stand on the land 30 and cry in a loud voice of sorrow over you. They will throw dust on their heads and roll in ashes. 31 They will cut off their hair because of you, and dress themselves in cloth made from hair. They will cry over you with much sorrow in their soul. 32 In their crying they will sing a song of sorrow for you, saying, ‘Who is like Tyre, destroyed and quiet in the sea? 33 When your good things went out on the sea, you pleased many nations. With all your riches and good things you made the kings of the earth rich. 34 Now you are wrecked by the sea, in the deep waters. Your good things and all your people have gone down with you. 35 All the people who live on the islands are full of fear and wonder because of you. Their kings are very afraid. Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters,.... Here the city of Tyre is compared to a vessel at sea, with great propriety, it being built in the sea, and its trade chiefly there; and its rulers and governors, or the inhabitants of it, to rowers; literally the men of Zidon and Arvad were her rowers, Ezekiel 27:8, the straits, difficulties, and distresses these brought Tyre into, are compared to great waters; who, by some unadvised step or another, provoked the king of Babylon to come against them with his army, and lay siege unto them:
the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas; a wind very fatal to ships and mariners; see Psalms 48:7, by it are meant Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldean army; so called, because of their great force and fury; and because Babylon, from whence they came, lay somewhat to the east of Tyre. So the Targum,
"a king who is strong as the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas.''

Verse Ezekiel 27:26. Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters — Tyre is still considered under the allegory of a ship; and all the vessels of different nations trading with her are represented as towing her into deep waters-bringing her into great affluence. But while in this state, a stormy east wind, or a destructive wind, meaning the Chaldeans, arises, and dashes her to pieces! See the ode from Horace, already quoted on Ezekiel 27:4.
