Contextual Overview

1 The Word of the Lord came to me saying, 2 "Son of man, look toward Mount Seir and speak against it, 3 saying, ‘The Lord God says, "I am against you, Mount Seir. I will put out My hand against you and make you a waste land. 4 I will destroy your cities, and you will become a waste. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 5 You have always hated the people of Israel and have given them over to be killed at the time of their trouble, at the time of the punishment of the end. 6 So as I live," says the Lord God, "I will give you over to death, and you will not get away from death. Since you have not hated killing, death will come after you. 7 I will destroy Mount Seir and make it a waste. And I will kill all who travel through it. 8 I will fill its mountains with its dead. Those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys. 9 I will destroy you forever, and no one will live in your cities. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me,.... After the prophecy concerning the shepherds of Israel, and the goats of the flock, and of their oppressions of the sheep and lambs, the weak of the flock; and concerning the Messiah, and the blessings of grace promised the church in the latter day; came another concerning the destruction of her enemies, under the name of Seir or Edom:

saying: as follows:

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In Ezek. 35–36 we see the devastation of Edom, and the restoration of Israel. Edom was included among the nations against which Ezekiel prophesied Ezekiel 25:12-14. But its fuller doom was reserved for this place, because Edom was one of the surrounding nations that profited at first by Judah’s fall, and because it helps by way of contrast to bring out in a marked way the better future designed for Israel. Edom is the God-hating, God-opposing power, ever distinguished for its bitter hatred against Israel; and so the ruin of Edom is the triumph of Israel in the power of God.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXXV

The prophet having formerly predicted the ruin of Edom, the

same with Seir, (Ezekiel 25:12,)

now resumes and pursues the subject at greater length,

intimating, as did also Isaiah, (Isaiah 21:11-12,)

that though other nations should recover their liberty after

the fall of the Babylonian monarchy, the Edomites should

continue in bondage for their very despiteful behaviour towards

the children of Israel in the day of their calamity, 1-15.
