1 This word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 "Stand in the gate of the Lord's house and make this word known: ‘Hear the Word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who go through these gates to worship the Lord!'" 3 The Lord of All, the God of Israel, says, "Change your ways and your works for the better, and I will let you live in this place. 4 Do not trust the lies that say, ‘This is the house of the Lord, the house of the Lord, the house of the Lord.' 5 For if you for sure change your ways and what you do for the better, if you are fair as you judge between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not make it hard for the stranger from another land, or the child whose parents have died, or the woman whose husband has died, and do not kill those who are not guilty in this place, and stop going after other gods, for that will destroy you, 7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. 8 "See, you are trusting in lies which cannot help you. 9 Will you steal, kill, do sex sins, make false promises, give gifts to the false god Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are safe and free!' and still do all these hated sins?

Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name,.... The temple, as in Jeremiah 7:11, for though it was called by his name, and his name was called upon in it, yet this could not secure it from desolation; for so the name of the Lord was set in the tabernacle at Shiloh, and yet he forsook it through the wickedness of the people:
wherein ye trust; they trusted in the sacrifices there offered up, and the service there performed; in the holiness of the place, and because it was the residence of the divine Majesty; wherefore they thought this would be a protection and defence of them; and this was trusting in lying words, as in Jeremiah 7:4:
and unto the place which I gave unto you and your fathers; meaning either Jerusalem; and so the Syriac version renders it, "and to the city"; or the whole land of Judea, as in Jeremiah 7:7:
