“Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”
Then said they vnto him, Who art thou, that we may giue an answere to them that sent vs? What sayest thou of thy selfe?
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
Therefore, they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
So they said to him, "Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Finally, they said, "Who are you then? We have to give an answer to the ones who sent us. Tell us who you are!"
So they said to him, "Who are you? — so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?"
They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
Then they said, "Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Give us an answer to tell the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then said they vnto him, Who art thou, that we may giue an answere to them that sent vs? What sayest thou of thy selfe?
Then they said to him, Who are you? so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?
"Then tell us who you are," they said. "We have to take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, Who are you, that we may give an answer to those sending us? What do you say about yourself?
They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?
They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you? We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
And they said to him, And who art thou ? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself ?

Then sayde they vnto hym: What art thou? that we may geue an aunswere to them that sent vs: What sayest thou of thy selfe?
They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they to him, Who art thou? That we may give an answer to them that sent us.
So they pressed the question. "Who are you?" they said--"that we may take an answer to those who sent us. What account do you give of yourself?"
Therfor thei seiden to hym, Who art thou? that we yyue an answere to these that senten vs. What seist thou of thi silf?
They said therefore to him, Who are you? that we may give an answer to those that sent us. What do you say of yourself?
Then said they to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
"Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
So they said unto him - Who, art thou? that, an answer, we may give, unto them who sent us, - What sayest thou, concerning thyself?
They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?
They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
Then sayd they vnto him: what arte thou that we maye geve an answer to them that sent vs: What sayest thou of thy selfe?
They said then to him, `Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those sending us? what dost thou say concerning thyself?'
Then sayde they vnto him: What art thou the, yt we maye geue answere vnto the that sent vs? What sayest thou of yi self?
said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self?
Exasperated, they said, "Who, then? We need an answer for those who sent us. Tell us something—anything!—about yourself."
"Then who are you? We've got to go back and tell the leaders who you are. Just tell us."

Then said they unto him, who art thou?.... Since, as yet, he had only answered in negatives, who he was not, that he was not the Christ, nor Elias, nor that prophet; they desire he would give them a positive account who he was:
that we may give answer to them that sent us; that their labour might not be in vain; that they might not come so far for nothing, without knowing who he was; and that they might be capable of giving an account of him to the sanhedrim:
what sayest thou of thyself? they insisted on it, that he would openly, and honestly declare who he was, and what was his office and business; that from his own mouth, and not from the opinion and conjectures of others, they might represent him in a true light to those who had deputed them on this errand.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse 22. That we may give an answer to them that sent us. — These Pharisees were probably a deputation from the grand Sanhedrin; the members of which, hearing of the success of the Baptist's preaching, were puzzled to know what to make of him, and seriously desired to hear from himself what he professed to be.
