Contextual Overview

1 ‘This is the Law of the guilt gift. It is most holy. 2 They are to kill the guilt gift in the place where they kill the burnt gift. And the religious leader should put its blood around on the altar. 3 Then he will give all its fat, the fat tail, the fat that covers the inside parts, 4 the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and the part that is on the liver which he will take away with the kidneys. 5 The religious leader will burn them on the altar as a gift by fire to the Lord. It is a guilt gift. 6 Every male among the religious leaders may eat of it. It will be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy. 7 The guilt gift is like the sin gift. There is one Law for them. It belongs to the religious leader who pays the price for sin with it. 8 And the religious leader who gives any man's burnt gift will keep for himself the skin of the burnt gift he has given. 9 Every grain gift that is baked in a stove and everything that is cooked in a pot or on top of a stove will belong to the religious leader who gives it. 10 And every grain gift, mixed with oil or dry, will belong to all the sons of Aaron, to all the same.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the two kidneys, and the fat that [is] on them,.... Which are usually covered with fat:

which [is] by the flanks: or rather that which is "upon" them y; for this respects not the situation of the kidneys, nor the fat upon them, but the fat which is upon the flanks, as distinct from that, and where there are great collops of it, see Job 15:27:

and the caul [that is] above the liver; the lobe upon the liver, according to the Septuagint:

with the kidneys, it shall he take away; all the fat before mentioned, together with the kidneys, were to be taken away from the ram of the trespass offering, and burnt, as follows.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See Leviticus 5:14 note. In Leviticus 7:2 “sprinkle” should rather be cast Leviticus 1:5. All the details regarding the parts put on the altar are repeated for each kind of sacrifice, because the matter was one of paramount importance.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Leviticus 7:4. The fat that is on them — Chiefly the fat that was found in a detached state, not mixed with the muscles; such as the omentum or caul, the fat of the mesentery, the fat about the kidneys, &c. Leviticus 3:9, &c.
