"‘But you, Mountains of Israel, will burst with new growth, putting out branches and bearing fruit for my people Israel. My people are coming home! Do you see? I'm back again. I'm on your side. You'll be plowed and planted as before! I'll see to it that your population grows all over Israel, that the towns fill up with people, that the ruins are rebuilt. I'll make this place teem with life—human and animal. The country will burst into life, life, and more life, your towns and villages full of people just as in the old days. I'll treat you better than I ever have. And you'll realize that I am God . I'll put people over you—my own people Israel! They'll take care of you and you'll be their inheritance. Never again will you be a harsh and unforgiving land to them.

Contextual Overview

1 Thou therefore. Son of man, Prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, - and thou shalt say, Ye mountains of Israel Hear ye the word of Yahweh. 2 Thus saith My Lord, Yahweh, Because the enemy hath said concerning you Aha! Even the high places of age-past times, for a possession have become ours 3 Therefore, prophesy, and thou shalt say, Thus saith My Lord Yahweh-Because even because they have desolated and panted for you on every side That ye should become a possession to the rest of the nations, And ye have come up into the talk of the tongue and the slander of the people 4 Therefore ye mountains of Israel, hear ye the word of My Lord Yahweh, - Thus saith My Lord, Yahweh, To the mountains and to the hills, to the channels and to the valleys, and to the desolate waste places and to the cities that are forsaken, which have become a prey and a derision, to the rest of the nations which are on every side: 5 Therefore, Thus, saith My Lord, Yahweh, Surely in the fire of my jealousy, have I spoken against the rest of the nation and against Edom all of it, - - Who have given my land to themselves for a possession, In the rejoicing of all the heart In contempt of soul, To make of its produce a prey. 6 Therefore prophesy, concerning the so of Israel, - and say to the mountains and to the hills, to the channels and to the valleys Thus saith My Lord Yahweh, Behold me! in my jealousy and in mine indignation, have I spoken, Because the insult of the nations, ye have borne; 7 Therefore Thus saith My Lord Yahweh, I myself have lifted my hand,- Surely the nations which are yours round about, they their own shame, shall bear: 8 But ye O mountains of Israel Your boughs, shall ye shoot forth, And your fruit, shall ye bear For my people Israel, For they have drawn near to enter. 9 For lo! I am towards you, Therefore will I turn towards you, And ye shall be tilled and sewn; 10 And I will multiply, upon you - men, All the house of Israel All of it, Then shall the cities be inhabited, And the waste places, shall be but,

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But ye, O mountains of Israel,.... Literally understood, as appears by what follows; for though they could not hear what was said, the proprietors of them could, now in captivity; and the efficacy of the word should be seen on them, producing the following effects:

ye shall shoot forth your branches; that is, the trees that grew upon them should; the vines, and the olive trees, planted on hills and mountains, as was usual, as appears from the mount of Olives, and other places:

and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; not only put forth branches, but bear fruit; and which should be given to the right owners, the people of Israel, and not to the Heathens, who had claimed the ancient mountains for their possession:

for they are at hand to come; the Israelites; either by repentance, as Kimchi; or by a return from the Babylonish captivity, which was about forty or fifty years after this prophecy; and which was but a shadow and figure of their restoration in the latter day, yet to come; which might be said to be at hand, or near, with respect to God, with whom two or three thousand years are as nothing. The Targum is,

"for the day of my redemption is near to come.''

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

They are at hand to come - i. e., under Zerubbabel.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Ezekiel 36:8. For they are at hand to come. — The restoration of the Jews is so absolutely determined that you may rest assured it will take place; and be as confident relative to it, as if you saw the different families entering into the Israelitish borders. It was near at hand in God's determination, though there were about fifty-eight of the seventy years unelapsed.
