Contextual Overview

1 Then he brought me back unto the entrance of the house, and lo! waters coming forth from under the threshold of the house eastward, because the front of the house, was to the east, - and the waters, were coming down from beneath, from the right side of the house, on the south of the altar. 2 Then he brought me out by way of the north gate, and took me round by an outer way, unto an outer gate that which looketh eastward - and lo! waters trickling forth out of the right side. 3 When the man went forth with a measuring line in his hand, then measured he a thousand, by the cubit, and caused me to pass through the waters - waters reaching to the ankles. 4 Then measured he a thousand, and caused me to pass through the waters - waters reaching to the knees, - and again measured he a thousand, and caused me to pass through-waters reaching to the loins. 5 Then measured he a thousand - a river which I could not pass through - for the waters had risen-waters to swim in, la river, that could not be forded. 6 Then said he unto me Hast thou seen son of man? Then he took me along and caused me to return to the bank of the river. 7 When returned, then lo! by the hank of the river, trees very many, - on this side and on that side. S 8 And he said unto me these waters are going forth unto the region toward the east and shall go down unto the waste plain, a and shall eater the sea, unto the sea being led forth, then shall the waters be healed; 9 And it shall come to pass that every living soul that swarmeth whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live, and the fish shall become a very great multitude; for these waters have come thither, that they may be healed so shall everything live whithersoever the river cometh. 10 And it shall come to pass that there shall stand by it fishers, from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim, places for spreading out nets, shall they be, - after their kind, shall be their fish, like the fish of the great sea exceeding many.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees,.... The man with his line measured another thousand cubits straight on from the first; and then bid the prophet cross and ford them again, and then they were knee deep:

again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins; a third time he measured a thousand cubits still onward, and ordered the prophet to wade through them, when they were risen so high as to reach his loins. The waters to the knees and loins may signify the greater knowledge of the Gospel, and the mysteries of it, the apostles had after the Spirit was poured forth; and the greater spread of it in the world, among Jews and Gentiles: or else may design those doctrines of the Gospel, and mysteries of grace, which are more sublime, and more difficult to understand; which require some pains to search into, and get the knowledge of; as concerning predestination, election, the covenant of grace, and the eternal transactions between the Father and the Son, &c. which are meat for strong men, who have their senses exercised to discern between good and evil.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The knees - The mission of Paul and Barnabas Acts 13:1-4 is another marked epoch in the Church’s history; and the time of Paul’s martyrdom denotes an increase in the Gentile Church, which corresponds with the waters reaching the loins.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible
