THE MESSAGE
Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went off with the noblemen from Moab. As he was going, though, God's anger flared. The angel of God stood in the road to block his way. Balaam was riding his donkey, accompanied by his two servants. When the donkey saw the angel blocking the road and brandishing a sword, she veered off the road into the ditch. Balaam beat the donkey and got her back on the road.
New American Standard Bible (1995)
So Balaam arose in the morning, and saddled his donkey and went with the leaders of Moab.

Contextual Overview

15 Then added Balak again, - to send princes, more and weightier than these. 16 And they came in unto Balaam, - and said unto him - Thus, said Balak son of Zipper, Do not be withheld, I pray thee from coming unto me: 17 For I will honour, thee, exceedingly, and all that thou shalt say unto me, will I do. Do come therefore I pray thee oh revile me this people. 18 And Balaam responded and said unto the servants of Balak, Though Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the bidding of Yahweh my God, to do less or more. 19 Now, therefore abide here, I pray you even ye, - for the night, - that I may get to know what further Yahweh may be speaking with me. 20 And God came in unto Balaam, by night, and said unto him - If, to call thee, the men have come in, arise go with them, - But only, the thing that I shall speak unto thee, that, shalt thou do. 21 So Balaam arose in the morning, and sad-dled his ass, - and went with the princes of Moab.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Balaam rose up in the morning,.... Early, not waiting for the call of the princes, which showed how eager he was to be gone, and how intent upon the journey:

and saddled his ass; which, if he did himself, as Jarchi suggests, this is a further proof of the haste he was in; though, as he had two servants with him, it is more likely that they did it by his order: the same is said of Abraham, Genesis 22:3, it was usual for persons of note and figure, in those times and countries, to ride on asses, Judges 5:10 and went with the princes of Moab; in company with them, and with as good a will as they, his heart and theirs being alike, as Jarchi notes; though it seems by what follows that by some means or another they soon parted company; for when the affair of the ass happened, Balaam was alone, only attended by his two servants.
