THE MESSAGE
"I, God , the Master, say: ‘Disaster after disaster! Look, it comes! Endtime— the end comes. The end is ripe. Watch out, it's coming! This is your fate, you who live in this land. Time's up. It's zero hour. No dragging of feet now, no bargaining for more time. Soon now I'll pour my wrath on you, pay out my anger against you, Render my verdict on the way you've lived, make you pay for your disgusting obscenities. I won't look the other way, I won't feel sorry for you. I'll make you pay for the way you've lived. Your disgusting obscenities will boomerang on you. Then you'll realize that it is I, God , who have hit you.

Contextual Overview

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2 And thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God to the land of Israel: The end is come, the end is come upon the four quarters of the land. 3 Now is an end come upon thee, and I will send my wrath upon thee, and I will judge thee according to thy ways: and I will set all thy abominations against thee. 4 And my eye shall not spare thee, and I will shew thee no pity: but I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thy abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5 Thus saith the Lord God: One affliction, behold an affliction is come. 6 An end is come, the end is come, it hath awaked against thee: behold it is come. 7 Destruction is come upon thee that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of slaughter is near, and not of the joy of mountains. 8 Now very shortly I will pour out my wrath upon thee, and I will accomplish my anger in thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and I will lay upon thee all thy crimes. 9 And my eye shall not spare, neither will I shew mercy: but I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thy abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and you shall know that I am the Lord that strike. 10 Behold the day, behold it is come: destruction is gone forth, the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Thus saith the Lord God,.... Here should be a stop, a colon, requiring attention to what follows, it being something awful and terrible:

an evil, an only evil, behold, it cometh; meaning the destruction of the city and temple; which, though but one, was such an one as was never known before nor was there any like it. The Targum is,

"evil after evil, lo, it cometh;''

one evil after another; when one evil is gone, another comes, as in Ezekiel 7:26. The Syriac version is, "behold, evil for evil comes"; the evil of punishment for the evil of sin.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

An only evil - An evil singular and remarkable above all others.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Ezekiel 7:5. An evil, an only evil — The great, the sovereign, the last exterminating evil, is come: the sword, the pestilence, the famine, and the captivity. Many MSS. read אחר achar, after. So evil cometh after evil; one instantly succeeds another.
