Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus to look for Saul. He found him and brought him back to Antioch. They were there a whole year, meeting with the church and teaching a lot of people. It was in Antioch that the disciples were for the first time called Christians.

Contextual Overview

¹⁹Now there were many cowboys who had scattered when Steve was killed. They went to Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch in Syria. They stuck to tellin' Jewish folks about Jesus. ²⁰But there were some of them, particularly some cowboys from Cyprus and Cyrene, who started telling Greeks about the good news of Jesus Christ. ²¹God was with them, and many folks started riding for the Lord. ²²News got back to Jerusalem about what was happening. Barnabas was sent to check things out in Antioch. ²³When he got there, he beheld quite a sight. He encouraged all the new cowboys to remain true to the brand and ride for the Lord with all their hearts. ²⁴Barnabas was a good cowboy who was filled with the Holy Ghost and full of faith. He showed many people how to ride for God's outfit. ²⁵Barnabas struck a long trot for Tarsus to find Saul. ²⁶When he found him, they both went back to Antioch. For an entire year, these two cowboys met with all the cowboys in Antioch and taught them how to ride for Jesus. This was the first place the term "Christian" was used to describe a cowboy ridin' for the Lord.

Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus,.... "In Cilicia" to seek Saul; who had been sent thither by the brethren that he might escape the rage of the Grecians, who sought to slay him, Acts 9:29.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Then departed ... - Why Barnabas sought Saul is not known. It is probable, however, that it was owing to the remarkable success which he had in Antioch. There was a great revival of religion, and there was need of additional labor. In such times the ministers of the gospel need additional help, as men in harvest-time need the aid of others. Saul was in this vicinity Acts 9:30, and he was eminently suited to assist in this work. With him Barnabas was well acquainted Acts 9:27, and probably there was no other one in that vicinity whose help he could obtain.
