1 Then the head preacher asked Steve, "What have you got to say about this?"
2This is what he said, "Listen to me, all you. God, in all his glory, showed himself to our greatest of granddaddies, Abe. He did this while Abe still lived in Mesopotamia, before he moved to Haran.
3God said to him, 'Leave your ranch behind and strike a long trot toward the place I've shown ya.'
4So Abe did just that and stayed in Haran until his daddy had died. Then God led him to the land where we now live.
5"But God didn't give him the land. Not even a small water lot to keep his horses. But God did say he would give all the land to Abe's descendants. This was ironic because Abe and his wife couldn't have kids.
6God also told Abe his descendants would be in a foreign country as slaves for four hundred years.
7God said, 'But I'll pay back that country for all the abuse they'll give your family. When all is said and done, they will leave that country and come back here to worship me.'
8"God also taught Abe the pickle-clippin' promise. When Abe's son, Isaac, was born, he clipped his little boy's pickle on the eighth day just like God told him to. The ceremony continued with Isaac's boy, Jake, and on down the line to his boys. And it is Jake's boys who would become the twelve patriarchs of Israel.
9"Now these patriarchs were jealous of one of their brothers. They ended up selling their brother Joseph to some slavers from Egypt. But God was takin' care of Joseph
10and saved his hide from a bunch of troubles down there. God helped Joseph become the second most powerful man in Egypt behind Pharaoh.

Not then growing, or gathering in there, or that was of that year's produce; for the famine was strong in the land of Egypt, as well as in Canaan; but was what had been laid up, and preserved in the seven years of plenty, by the order and care of Joseph; which by some means or another, Jacob had heard of; see Genesis 42:1 the Jews suggest u, that it was by divine revelation:
he sent out our fathers first; the first time, or the first year of the famine; or he sent them first, he laid his commands on them, or they had not gone; these were the ten sons of Jacob, and brethren of Joseph, who were sent the first time, for Benjamin stayed with his father: see Genesis 42:3.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Was corn in Egypt - The word âcornâ here rather denotes âwheat.â See the notes on Matthew 12:1.
Our fathers - His ten sons; all his sons except Joseph and Benjamin, Genesis 42:0: Stephen here ârefersâ only to the history, without entering into details. By this general reference he sufficiently showed that he believed what Moses had spoken, and did not intend to show him disrespect.
