⁷Tychicus is going to fill you in on the rest of what I've been up to and how I am doing. He's a top hand for the Lord and I am so thankful for him. ⁸I chose him because he's going to tell y'all the truth about what we've been going through. This message is going to encourage y'all to keep on keeping on. ⁹Onesimus in going to be riding with him. He's also a top hand and one of y'all. They're going to tell y'all everything. ¹⁰My cellmate, Aristarchus, says to tell y'all hello. Mark, Barnabas's cousin, is also here with us. If Mark comes to see y'all, welcome him as if it were me. ¹¹Jesus (not the Lord, but the one we call Justus) also said to tell y'all hello. These are the only Jews who now ride for the brand of Christ who have joined me in this gathering. They have been great hands and a comfort to me on my journey. ¹²Epaphras, one of your own cowboys and a friend to us, sends greetings as well. He's constantly praying for y'all to become better and better cowboys, strong and perfect in Christ. He asks God to fill y'all with confidence in your ride with the Lord. ¹³Don't let there be any doubt that he is one who is praying for y'all and all the cowboys in Laodicea and Hierapolis. ¹⁴Doctor Luke and Demas give their love and prayers as well. ¹⁵Please give a hug and a handshake to the cowboys and cowgirls at Laodicea, as well as the rest of the outfit that meets at Nympha's house. ¹⁶After you show this letter to everyone there, send it on to Laodicea so they can take a gander at it. I'm sending a letter to them too, so get theirs and read what I wrote them.

Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose,.... That is, to relate to them his affairs both temporal and spiritual; and also,

that he might know your estate. The Arabic version renders it, "that I may know your estate" by him when he returned again; as whether they continued steadfast in the Gospel, and observed the order, ordinances, and discipline of it; how it prospered, and was succeeded among them, to their comfort and edification, and to the conversion of others; and what reception the false teachers had among them; and what love, concord, and harmony were among themselves; or what were their afflictions and distresses from their enemies. The Ethiopic version renders it, "that ye may know the history of me"; which agrees with a manuscript mentioned by Grotius, which reads, "that ye may know the things concerning us", as does the Alexandrian copy; and with Ephesians 6:22 where it is added, as here, and "comfort your hearts"; who might be greatly cast down upon hearing of the sufferings of the apostle, and also with those they themselves endured both from within and from without, from sin, Satan, and the world; see on Gill "Eph 6:22".

Verse 8. That he might know your estate — Instead of ινα γνω τα περι υμων, that HE may know YOUR affairs, ABD*FG, many others, with the AEthiopic, Itala, Theodoret, and Damascenus, read ινα γνωτε τα περι ημων, that YE may know OUR affairs; which is probably the true reading. Tychicus was sent to them, not to know their affairs, but with Onesimus, to carry this epistle and make the apostle's state known to them, and comfort their hearts by the good news which he brought. The next verse confirms this meaning.
