Contextual Overview
1Six days before the Passover party, Jesus rode up to Bethany to visit Lazarus and his sisters.
2A meal was prepared in Jesus's honor.
3Then Mary got a bottle of priceless perfume and poured it on Jesus's feet. She wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with a pleasing aroma.
4But Judas Iscariot, the cowboy who would later double-cross Jesus, said,
5"Why is she wasting that perfume? We could've sold that and given money to the poor. That cost a year's wages."
6He didn't care about the poor. He was the treasurer of the ministry and dipped his hand into the cookie jar all the time.
7"Let her alone," Jesus said. "She's preparing my body for the day of my death.
8The poor will always be around, but I won't."
9When word got out that Jesus was in town, people came from all around to see him and the man who had come back from the dead.
10Lazarus's fame had him on the radar of the church's head honchos. They planned to kill him too.

Because that by reason of him,.... Of the miracle which was wrought upon him, in raising him from the dead, of which he was a living and an abiding witness:
many of the Jews went away; not from Jerusalem only, but from the chief priests and Pharisees, and the rest of the Jews, that combined against Christ; they withdrew themselves from their party, and deserted them:
and believed on Jesus; as the Messiah; so that they found their interest was decreasing and weakening every day, and that those on the side of Christ were increasing; and this they could not bear, and therefore consulted to take away the life of Lazarus, as well as Jesus; who they imagined, as long as he lived, would be a means of inducing persons to believe in Jesus as the Messiah: whereas if he was dead, the fact would be forgotten, or be more easily denied.
