Contextual Overview

11I'm headed home, but they will be stuck here for a while longer. Holy Father, keep them safe by the power of your name, and the power of the name you gave me. That way they can be as close as me and you. 12I've been watching over them, and I didn't lose a single one. None has been lost except the one who was destined for destruction. It had to happen that way to fulfill the things written long ago in the Good Book. 13"I'm headed your way, but I say these things while I'm still here. I want them to feel the same way about you as I do. They need to feel that kind of joy. 14I've given them your Word, but the world hates them because of it. They stand out now just as I did. 15I'm not asking you to remove them from this world, but to protect them from the devil. 16They don't belong to him any more than I did.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. These words are repeated from John 17:14, where they are given as a reason of the world's hatred to them; and here, as showing that they are exposed to the evil of it; and in both are used as an argument with his Father, that he would take notice of them, and preserve them.
