Contextual Overview

12Later, Jesus and his cowboys rode to Capernaum for a spell. His mother and brothers rode along also. 13It was gettin' close to the big Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 14When he got to the main church, he saw people making a mockery of the sacrificial system by selling cattle, sheep, and doves. There were also people making a fortune off of exchanging money for foreigners. 15Jesus sat down and braided a bullwhip out of some rope and sent all those scoundrels runnin' for the fences. He drove out all the stock and flipped over the tables of the money exchangers. 16He stopped in front of the dove salesmen and said, "Get out and take all these doves with you. My Daddy's house isn't a shopping center." 17His cowboys remembered that it had been written long ago, "I'll protect my Daddy's place at all cost." 18But Jesus's actions stirred up the Jewish leaders. They asked him, "Who do you think you are? If God gave you authority to do this, then give us a sign to prove it, cowboy." 19Jesus said, "Knock this church down, and I'll rebuild it in three days." 20They scoffed at him, "It took forty-six years to build this church. You think you could rebuild it in three days?" 21But they didn't realize that when he said "this church", he was talking about his body.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But he spoke of the temple of his body. Which was the antitype of the material temple; and might well be called so, since the bodies of the saints are called temples, 1 Corinthians 3:16 2 Corinthians 6:16; and the human nature of Christ is called a tabernacle, Hebrews 8:2; and he himself, in prophecy, is said to be למקדש, "for a sanctuary", or temple, Isaiah 8:14, and that because the fulness of the Godhead dwelt in him bodily, the train of the divine perfections filled the temple of his human nature, Colossians 2:9. And because here, as in the temple, God grants his presence, and communes with his saints, accepts of their prayers and praises, and all their spiritual sacrifices through him; and who is the oracle, the true "Urim" and "Thummim", by whom he delivers his whole mind and will to his people.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse John 2:21. Of the temple of his body. — Rather, the temple, his body: his body had no particular temple: but it was the temple of his Divinity-the place in which, as in the ancient temple, his Godhead dwelt; See how the Jews perverted these words, Matthew 26:60, and the notes there.
