¹The next day, Jesus attended a wedding in Cana with his mom. ²Jesus's twelve cowboys were also invited to the party. ³The celebration ran out of wine before the party was over and Jesus's mom said, "They've run out of wine." ⁴"That ain't none of my business," Jesus replied. "I'm staying out of the limelight for now, but my time will come." ⁵But Mary was undaunted, and she told the serving staff, "Do whatever he tells you to do." ⁶There were six water barrels nearby that the Jews used for their ritual washing. Each barrel could hold about thirty gallons. ⁷Jesus told the serving staff, "Fill those barrels with water." After this was done, ⁸he said, "Take some out and give it to the person in charge of the party." The staff hurried and did as instructed. ⁹The fellow in charge had no idea where the wine had come from, but the servants knew. The guy called the groom over to him and said, ¹⁰"Most people serve the best wine first. After everyone is drunk, then they bring out the cheap stuff. But you did so differently. You saved the best wine for last."

His mother said unto the servants,.... She took the reproof in good part, and by the words he said, and the manner in which he spoke them, or by the looks he gave, and the gestures he might use, she hoped, and even believed, that the thing she moved for would be done; and therefore went immediately to the servants, and gave them the following instructions:

whatsoever he saith unto you, do [it]; punctually observe and obey his orders in every circumstance.

His mother saith ... - It is evident from this verse that his mother did not understand what he had said as a harsh reproof and repulse, but as an indication of his willingness at the proper time to furnish wine. In all this transaction he evinced the appropriate feelings of a son toward a mother.

Verse John 2:5. His mother saith, &c.] The virgin seems to have understood our Lord as hinted above. It was not yet time to grant them a supply, because the want had not as yet been generally felt. But, silently receiving the respectful caution, she saw that the miracle should be wrought when it best suited the purposes of the Divine wisdom.
