THE MESSAGE
Peter and the other disciple left immediately for the tomb. They ran, neck and neck. The other disciple got to the tomb first, outrunning Peter. Stooping to look in, he saw the pieces of linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. Simon Peter arrived after him, entered the tomb, observed the linen cloths lying there, and the kerchief used to cover his head not lying with the linen cloths but separate, neatly folded by itself. Then the other disciple, the one who had gotten there first, went into the tomb, took one look at the evidence, and believed. No one yet knew from the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. The disciples then went back home.

Contextual Overview

1Early Sunday morning before sunrise, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus's grave and saw that the big stone had been rolled away. 2She came running back to Pete and the cowboy who Jesus loved, and said, "Jesus has been taken. We don't know where he is." 3So Pete and the other cowboy headed out toward the grave at a high lope. 4Pete was still on his way when the other cowboy stuck his head in the tomb. 5Inside he could see the grave linens, but he didn't go in. 6Pete got there at this point and barreled right by him and went in. He saw the grave linens lying there, 7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus's head. The cloth was laying there right where Jesus's head should have been. 8Finally, the other cowboy joined Pete inside. He saw what had happened and believed. 9Until now, they hadn't understood that Jesus would come riding back from the grave. 10Then they went back to the house.

Peter therefore went forth,.... Out of the house where he was, upon hearing the account Mary gave:

and that other disciple; John, the Evangelist and Apostle; the rest of the disciples staying at home and continuing together, waiting to hear what account these two would bring:

and came to the sepulchre; to see with their own eyes what was done, and whether things were as Mary had related; and to make a more particular inquiry into, and examination of them.
