Contextual Overview
4Jesus was riding through Samaria and
5came to a town called Sychar. It was right by a ranchito that Jacob had given his son Joseph.
6Jacob's well was near this small plot of land. Jesus dismounted and stretched his legs next to the well. He'd come a far piece for it just being noon and he was tired.
7About this time, a Samaritan woman came by to get some water and Jesus asked her, "Would you fetch me a drink, ma'am?"
8None of his cowboys were there because they'd gone into town to get some food.
9She nearly fell down when he asked her because Jews don't talk to Samaritans. She said, "Is there something wrong with you? Jews don't talk to Samaritans, and you're asking me to give you a drink?"
10Jesus replied, "If you had an inkling of the gift God has given, you would ask me for a drink, and I would give you living water."
11"Well, that might prove a tad difficult for you, sir. You don't even have a rope or a bucket. This well is very deep. So where are you going to get this living water?
12Do you think your water is better than our ancestor Jacob's? He drank from it himself, and it has sustained us and our livestock for generations."
13Jesus smiled as he kneeled down by the well and said, "Anyone who drinks this water will eventually get thirsty again.

This she said also, in the same sneering and scoffing way, as her talking of not thirsting and coming thither to draw water, shows; and it is as if she had said, pray give me some of this fine water you talk of, that I may never thirst again; and so have no occasion to be at all this fatigue and trouble, to come daily to this well for water: though some think, that she now spoke seriously, having some little knowledge of what our Lord meant by living water, but with a mixture of much ignorance, and that she heartily desired it; but the reason she gives, shows the contrary.
